Located within Meharry Medical College, the Meharry Medical College Dorothy Brown Adaptive Reuse transforms a former dormitory into an administrative office space. Named in honor of Dorothy Brown, M.D. ’48—Meharry’s notable alumna, the first Black female surgeon licensed in Tennessee and the South, and the first Black female elected to the Tennessee Legislature—this adaptive reuse project strips the outdated infrastructure and rebuilds the space to accommodate modern office functions. The design features a light color palette accented by darker wood-stained doors and trim, creating an airy, open atmosphere complemented by natural tones. The building’s red brick exterior nods to classic Southern architecture, blending tradition with functionality. Completion is anticipated in March 2025.
